Chapter 27
The surface of New London crawled beneath us, its cratered surface, gray and bleak, displayed on the main vidscreen of the Bridge. The last few weeks had been, in a word, tedious, but weâd finally arrived. And now, this.
âWhat do you mean we canât dock?â I asked, as I spun my seat to look across the Bridge at Kyra.
âI never said we couldnât dockâ, she said. âJust that, given what weâve heard, itâs probably not a very good idea.â
âSo we donât dock, based on a rumor.â
âWhen the rumor is that thereâs a security team standing by at the port, waiting to arrest you, then yeah, Iâd give it some consideration.â
âThey arrested me beforeâ, I said. âDidnât work out so well for them.â
âAs I recallâ, she said, âIt didnât work out so well for you, either. And my guess is, theyâll do a better job of it, this time.â
I sighed.
âIâd be a lot more inclined to believe the tip, if we knew who sent itâ, I said.
âI donât disagreeâ, she said. âThe problem is, they sent an unsigned comm link message. You send one anonymously, and itâll stay that way. Given the nature of the message, Iâm thinking it was sent by a friend, rather than a foe. Probably one of your AI buddies.â
âSo what?â I asked. âWe just sit up here in orbit, stuck in zero gee?â
âI donât believe the New London Directorate would be quite this subtle, if they didnât want us on their moonâ, Kyra said. âI think theyâd just tell us how nice it is to see us again, and by the way, donât land. I really doubt theyâd try to trick us into not landing.â
âInsteadâ, I said, âWe show up, and they clear us to dock. I canât believe they want us that bad.â
âSo, you buy their whole âall is forgottenâ spiel, and just landâ, she said. âDo you even remember having to shoot your way out of here, last time? I thought you were a little smarter than that.â
âYeah, fine. Whateverâ, I said. âEvidence to the contrary notwithstanding, right? Look, Iâm not the only one whoâs gonna be pissed off that weâre not landing.â
âYour choiceâ, she said. âPersonally, I prefer being stuck in orbit than stuck in jail.â
âAlrightâ, I said. âYouâve made me sufficiently paranoid. Angie. Tell Owen weâll be staying in orbit, at least for the time being. And see if you can get someone from the Directorate on comm, please.â
âAye, Captainâ, she said. âIâve reached the Directorâs AI Victoria. The Director herself will call you back in a few minutes.â
âWeâll be standing by for her callâ, I said. âNow, since weâre here, Iâm thinking of sending out the video we made. Maybe do a pre-emptive PR strike, as it were. Thoughts?â
âI like itâ, Kyra said. âWe break the story, we control it. Theyâre gonna find out soon enough, when we turn our UP prisoners over to them.â
âAngieâ, I said. âCan you open a comm link to the local media?â
âSuch as it is, yesâ, she said.
